The Crotalia earrings

The ancient Romans adored pearls. Known as the “gems of the sea”, the nobility admired them even above diamonds. From his conquests, the General Pompey  brought back a huge collection of pearl crowns and had a portrait of himself created entirely from pearls. He began a trend that swept the empire and A whole new language of describing pearls in detail was born. 

Crotalia was part of this language, the description for pearls that were arranged to dangle and sway together and softly rattle when worn.
